idverde NL and Wallaard Groen have together signed a five-year agreement with ProRail for the management of the railway verges on the Rhine and Gouwe route.

The contract, to ecologically manage 84 kilometers of Dutch railway embankments, ensuring rail safety and improving biodiversity, was signed in October 2023 by Marc Bolier, CEO of idverde NL, Director Robin Castelijn of Wallaard Groen, and the management of ProRail. This marks the beginning of a challenging new project.

More Nature on the Verge

Until recently, the management of railway verges were included in general maintenance contracts. In 2021, in order to achieve ProRail's objectives to increase embankment biodiversity while prioritising safety, it was decided to instead tender rail-side management separately, with specific sustainable objectives, under the banner of ‘More Nature on the Verge’.

Safety as a priority

Safety remains the top priority for ProRail and embankment management must not negatively impact the safety of employees or the track. This means sightlines must remain visible to train drivers and the track must be accessible at all times. Within these clear parameters, idverde NL and Wallaard Groen will work to promote native flora and fauna, minimizing invasive exotic species and strengthening nature along the railway.
