Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat South Netherlands, idverde NL delivered the integrated maintenance of the Maas area between 2020 and 2025.
Integrated management for a resilient river corridor.
Managing one of the Netherlands’ principal river systems requires a coordinated approach where water management, infrastructure, ecology, and public space work together. Stretching from Eijsden to the Biesbosch, including the Juliana Canal and the Lateraal Canal, the project covered bridges, locks, weirs, riverbanks, quays, mooring facilities, and surrounding green areas, ensuring the entire network remained safe, functional, and well maintained.
A key element of the project was the implementation of green-blue solutions that strengthen both environmental performance and water safety. Nature-inclusive measures, native planting, and sustainable maintenance techniques enhanced ecological connectivity, reinforced riverbanks, and improved habitats for local wildlife while maintaining the reliability of the water system.
The scale of the maintenance programme was extensive, encompassing more than 46,000 trees alongside a vast network of waterways, green spaces, and operational assets. Specialist arboriculture, ecological management, and integrated project delivery ensured the corridor continues to perform effectively while supporting long-term environmental objectives.
The project also brought together the expertise of idverde Realisation, idverde Advisory and idverde Tree Services, creating a fully integrated approach that aligned design, ecology, tree management, and long-term maintenance. This multidisciplinary collaboration supports not only today’s operational requirements but also future climate adaptation and biodiversity ambitions.
Through integrated environmental management, the project demonstrates how connecting nature, water, and essential assets can create a safer, more resilient, and sustainable river corridor for future generations.
